Roll Call of Officers
Roll Call of Officers: 1885-2020
A complete listing of names and dates of service for officers performing the job of state game warden does not exist. In 1983, the agency did begin issuing officers unique identification numbers as well as recording their dates of service. Prior to 1983, officers came and went with virtually no historical record compiled.
As discussed in Volume 1, during the first half of the 20th century, governors and local politicians routinely teamed up to appoint hundreds of people who then carried the title and authority of an officer but were never paid a salary. Many of these people failed to perform any services on behalf of the state. Governors viewed the appointments in terms of building political capital, not in providing public service. Therefore, each time gubernatorial party politics changed, so, too, did the ranks of the game and fish warden forces. It was common for a county to have democratic party-backed wardens who served under democratic administrations and republican party-backed wardens who served under republican administrations. It was also common for an officer’s name to appear one year only to disappear the next and then return again four or eight years later.
Unfortunately, due to this lack of official record, officers who faithfully served may not receive the recognition they so richly deserve. Conversely, others whose name happened to appear next to the title “game warden” may receive recognition they did not earn. The following list is a compilation of information as recalled by fellow officers, found in official documents, or located in various department and newspaper articles. This list, therefore, may only reflect partial years of service for some employees who served before 1983. To avoid cheating anyone of their due, the author decided a partial record was better than no record at all.
The list of officers serving 1983 and after is complete, as listed below and in Volume II.

Law Enforcement Officers and Support Personnel
Volume II contains the names of officers serving from 1950 through 2020. Effective January 1, 1983 (Special Order 82-02), the conservation police began issuing officers unique identification numbers. The entries below contain officer names, ID numbers, hiring and termination dates, final rank and the county of last assignment. The designation “Springfield” indicates the person last served in the main office.
When ID numbers were initially issued, they were based on seniority within the DOC, not necessarily within law enforcement. For this reason, an officer who worked for the department in another capacity before joining law enforcement may have an out-of-sequence ID number.
Also, the contributions made by the department’s civilian workforce to law enforcement’s overall objective is worthy of mention. Unfortunately, only the names of employees issued an ID number were logged, the others, like history itself, have faded with time. Their contributions, nevertheless, are laudable.
Officers retiring after 1950 but before the issuance of ID numbers in 1983, their final rank and area of assignment.
